’Auszüge’ ’Summaries’, W. Eichler latest work, is a series of mostly impressionistic pieces, which literally express a certain mood or describe a specific moment in time. ’Auszüge’ has always been intended for online release. Thus the short length pieces became a playground for experimenting with video footage as a medium. During his writing process W. Eichler regularly uses an old mini cassette tape memo recorder. Rather than being easy to use, the low-fi analog tape sound grew to be the way to further enhance the non-polished and melancholic character of the ’Auszüge’ pieces.

’Auszüge’ ’Summaries’, W. Eichler latest work, is a series of mostly impressionistic pieces, which literally express a certain mood or describe a specific moment in time.

Nowadays a large group, which mostly consist of an online audience, is not used to listening to a proper sized piece anymore. They scan the internet, click on something, and if their attention is gone they go to the next thing. The outcome shows that most of the audience is missing out on the context of larger pieces.

With ’Auszüge’ W. Eichler took this fact as a starting point to write complete and interesting pieces, but kept them short in length. By adding some imperfections, unexpected turns and rough voltas, it becomes more complicated to fully understand the piece at once. This way the listener is challenged to really listen to the piece. Instead of skipping forward, the listener is invited to press rewind to listen to the piece again to be able to explore its depth.

Because of the compressed nature of these specific pieces, which easily makes them come across as a fragment, or summary of a larger piece, W. Eichler gave it the title: ’Summaries’. Directly translating this into German, it becomes ’Auszüge’.

During his writing process W. Eichler regularly uses an old mini cassette tape memo recorder. Rather than being easy to use, the low-fi analog tape sound grew to be the way to further enhance the non-polished and melancholic character of the ’Auszüge’ pieces. As a result the whole series was recorded with the memo recorder in the composer’s living room.

’Auszüge’ has always been intended for online release. The short length pieces became a playground for experimenting with video footage as a medium. With the analog low-fi approach as inspiration, W. Eichler shot hours of video footage during the various seasons with an old VHS-C camera and combined this with found footage and collaborated with visual artists. The combination further enhanced the nostalgic warmth and impressionism, adding a pivotal grain to the pallet of the 12 pieces in ’Auszüge’.
